The MSA Nordic is the regional network of the Memory Studies Association (MSA) in Northern Europe. The MSA is a global professional association for Memory Studies scholars, as well as those who are active in museums, memorial institutions, archives, the arts and other fields engaged in remembrance.

The MSA Nordic aims to bring together scholars of memory studies across Northern Europe in order to share research ideas and results and to create regional collaborations and networks. At this inaugural meeting, we invite memory scholars and researchers working on memory questions within related disciplines (oral history, heritage studies, history, ethnography, political science, psychology etc.) to join us to present ongoing work or discuss research ideas.

We plan to organize panels around the following themes:

–        Administrations of memory and memory politics in Europe and beyond

–        Post-colonial memory in the North and North Atlantic region

–        Migration and transnational memory in Europe

–        Possibilities and limitations of “prosthetic memory”

–        Teaching history and memory

We welcome proposals for panels and individual papers on these or any other topics within the interdisciplinary field of memory studies.

Please send your proposal in the form of an abstract (around 300 words for individual papers, for panels 300 words to describe the panel and 100 words for each contribution) and a brief biography (no more than 100 words) for each presenter to msanordic@gmail.com no later than 1^st of September.

There is no fee for participating in this symposium, but participants will have to organize and finance their own travel and stay.

Given the currently improving situation with the corona virus, we are expecting to be able to host the symposium with guests from around the Nordic region in Copenhagen in October. We will, however, monitor the developments closely, and we will let everyone know well in advance if we have to move the symposium to a different venue or format.
